aw man, this episode was a bizarre combination of really cracky and fun, but also sort of really sad and uncomfortable. i always feel like there’s a piece of Bashir that i’m missing, and his obsession with perfection in his self-image is really interesting and depressing and i wish that it came out more in the other episodes because it feels like an important part of him. the fact that he comes off so cocky while he’s simultaneously berating himself for his flaws AND terrified of fulfilling his own expectations of himself!! it seems deeply psychologically troubling and contradictory in a way that we don’t really see specifically in a lot of the others. they all have their own inner battles, to be sure, but i feel like Bashir doesn’t know himself, or maybe doesn’t want to know himself, as well as most of the other major characters do.
ugh, and can we talk about Julian quoting Garak back to him? ouch.
I wish we could see more of that too, especially since Julian was enhanced as a child to be who he is. I mean, that’s gotta make it hard for him to figure out himself. What would he have been otherwise? Does this make who he is fake? I liked in this book I read that took place after DS9 how Bashir wasn’t really happy about being enhanced. It was like this part of his past that he tried not to think about. In the show I guess they don’t show that at all and it’s kind of disappointing, but I think a more in-depth look into Julian’s inner psyche and battles with himself would be really awesome.
