“I started out playing Garak as someone who doesn’t have a defined sexuality. He’s not gay, he’s not straight, it’s a non-issue for him. Basically his sexuality is inclusive. But—it’s Star Trek and there were a couple of things working against that. One is that Americans really are very nervous about sexual ambiguity. Also, this is a family show, they have to keep it on the “straight and narrow”, so then I backed off from it. Originally, in that very first episode, I loved the man’s absolute fearlessness about presenting himself to an attractive human being. The fact that the attractive human being is a man (Bashir) doesn’t make any difference to him, but that was a little too sophisticated I think.”

- Andrew J. Robinson, on Elim Garak (via possiblie)

I was just wondering what Alexander Siddig thought about Garak/Bashir! I saw the quote from Andrew Robinson you just reblogged (the one how he loved the fearlessness of Garak presenting himself to an attractive person), and so I assume he was for the relationship. But what did Sid think? And did they deliberately add homoerotic subtext to their scenes together?

Sorry for not answering sooner, but I’ve had hardly any time for tumblr lately.

From everything that I’ve ever seen or read it seems that Sid is perfectly happy about Garak/Bashir. While Andy may have started the ball rolling, they have both since run with it. Not that they were encouraged though. The following quote, from here, probably explains why there wasn’t more said on the subject over the years.

Paramount also ordered Deep Space Nine actors Alexander Siddig and Andrew Robinson (Dr. Bashir and Cardassian spy Garak, respectively) to stop engaging in ribald speculation about their characters’ true feelings for each other at fan conventions

If the convention they did together in Spain last year is anything to go by though, either Paramount has lightened up over the years, or Sid and Andy just don’t care anymore.

As for adding subtext, I have heard that they both played with that, and one of the writers has also admitted that he wrote Garak as attracted to Bashir.

I just started rewatching DS9 (I was a kid when DS9 first showed) and was IMMEDIATELY SMITTEN WITH THESE TWO AND OH MY GOD THIS TUMBLR EXISTS MY LIFE IS COMPLETE

The Dream Box

Answering that ask earlier has got me thinking and now I’ve remembered something.

Sid and Andy also wrote a play together called ‘The Dream Box’ that they performed at conventions. I did a lot of searching once in an attempt to learn more about it, but I couldn’t find out very much. It sounded quite interesting though and I really wish they’d publish the script or something. All of the characters were just played by the two of them, and at one point Sid was playing Garak and Andy was Bashir!

I remember mentions of two scenes in particular. In the first one, someone mentioned that the scene changed just as Palandine (played by Andy) was putting the moves on Garak (played by Sid).

The other was where, through the Vinculum, Garak and Bashir were able to communicate without the universal translator. Garak was revelling in finally being able to truly understand Julian, in finally hearing all of the subtle meaning in his words and inflection that the UT can’t translate. They said he did this by asking Bashir over and over again to say ‘I love you’, like a parent to their child or how one would to a lover, etc. I don’t know why, but that makes me feel sad somehow.

I really wish I’d been able to see them perform this. *sigh*
